Joining STEP




Canadian membership of STEP is both diverse and highly specialized, with accredited professionals from all facets of the trust and estate planning industries including legal, accountancy, corporate, trust, banking and insurance.

STEP's Canadian members are experts in their field, having earned the profession's most respected and recognized designation, the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP). These senior-level practitioners are involved in the planning, creation, management of and accounting for trusts, estates and taxation of individuals and families.

Routes to Membership

There are three routes leading to full membership of STEP, one for experienced practitioners and two student routes:

  • The Experienced Practitioner (Merit) Route - open to persons who hold a recognized professional designation and who have a minimum of ten years current specialist experience in trusts and/or estates related matters.
  • The Qualified Practitioner (Essay) Route - open to persons who hold a recognized professional designation and who have a minimum of three years, current, post-designation, practical experience in trusts and/or estates related matters.
  • The STEP Canada Diploma (Exam) Route - intended for candidates who work, or aspire to work, in the trusts and estates industry in Canada. No experience or professional designation is required for candidates to join this route. Students with prior trust and estate experience tend to be the most successful.

Types of Membership

There are three types of membership in STEP:

  • Affiliate - have obtained 60-120 education or experience points under the Qualifications and Membership Framework

  • Technicians– have obtained 120-240 education or experience points under the Qualifications and Membership Framework
    Affiliates and Technicians and can move forward gaining points towards full membership and TEP designation with 240 points. To move from one category to the next individuals need to accumulate 60 education or experience points as they work towards their TEP.
  • Full Members – have obtained a minimum of 240 education and experience points under the Qualifications and Membership Framework, completed the professional standards awareness module, and successfully applied for TEP designation.
