Summary: This seminar, led by two experienced speakers, will focus on practical considerations affecting estates and trusts. Maitre Diane Tsonos will focus her discussion on practical tax and legal issues that arise in the settlement of estates, including changes resulting from the new testamentary trust and charitable donation rules. Maitre Caroline Rhéaume will consider recent amendments and legislative proposals with respect to the taxation of trusts, including the designation of the principal residence exemption and changes to capital gains as they relate to small business corporation shares, as well as the inter vivos trust as an estate planning tool, and the possibility of piercing the fiduciary veil.

Summary: This seminar, led by two tax and estate practitioners, will be a wide ranging examination of some old and new provisions of law and positions of the tax authorities deserving of consideration. Some of the provisions to be looked at can be considered traps for the unwary. Dealt with on a timely basis they might be considered to be opportunities for the wary. Issues considered will include some specific stop-loss rules, civil law aspects of wills and trusts as well as non-resident issues. Audience participation will be encouraged since there is no better teacher than collective experience.
